Removable, Snap-on, and Permanent Dentures

Removable Dentures

Traditional removable full dentures consist of a thin acrylic base that rests on the gum tissue and is the same color as your gums. Porcelain or acrylic replacement teeth built into the base give the appearance of natural teeth emerging from the gums.

Snap-on Dentures

Snap-on or partial dentures are an economical solution to replace the missing teeth and fill in the spaces, improving chewing ability and the confidence to smile. A snap-on partial denture in place will also help keep your natural teeth from shifting, lowering the risk of losing those teeth in the future.

Permanent Dentures

Permanent dentures are supported by dental implants. These offer a more natural feel but at an increased cost. We are proud to have our own specialty location for this service, the keith + associates dentistry Implant Center. Permanent dentures have less diet restrictions, easier maintenance and are more durable and last longer than other options.

Recommended Home Care

We suggest using a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean your gums twice day. It’s also crucial to soak your dentures in a non-abrasive cleanser each day to get rid of any debris from the previous day. While your dentures are molding to your mouth, they might not feel exactly like your natural teeth at first and you may experience some pain or blisters. Although they will take some getting used to this period is only temporary.

Denture Questions You May Have

  • Can You Chew With Dentures?

Dentures offer a reliable and effective replacement for natural teeth. Dentures are completely capable of chewing and being used to eat with. Certain precautions should be taken however with foods such as nuts, popcorn, or corn on the cob. Tough meats that require a lot of chewing can also be problematic. This is because strenuous chewing can cause dentures to rub against the surface areas of your mouth causing soreness. Also, certain foods such as nuts or certain candies can result in food particles and pieces becoming trapped between your dentures and your gums. So while dentures are fully capable of chewing foods there are certain practices to keep in mind for day-to-day comfort and maintenance.

  • Will My Teeth Ever Fall Out?

Denture teeth shouldn't become dislodged, however, it is possible in certain circumstances. If your bite applies pressure to your denture teeth unevenly there is the potential that if it isn't caught that undue pressure could be put on certain teeth weakening their bond to the base. Given proper repairs, maintenance, and dental checkups however, losing teeth is unlikely.

  • Do Dentures Hurt?

Dentures should not cause any active or ongoing discomfort. While dentures aren't your natural teeth any ongoing pain, soreness or discomfort is usually a sign that adjustments or repairs need to be made. It is possible for ill-fitting, broken, or warped dentures to cause issues but with regular checkups, good maintenance at home, and repairs scheduled as needed there should be no pain from your dentures.

  • Can I Bite Into Food?

There is a process to learning to chew with dentures. This process can take two to four weeks as you slowly introduce firmer and more complex food. After this initial period of adjustment, however, beyond normal precautions and hygiene considerations which you will be educated about, you can bite normally and into a wide range of foods without significant restrictions.

  • Are Dentures Expensive?

Dentures are one of the more affordable options for major dental restoration. Patients should expect to pay anywhere from $2500 to $5000. The difference in the quality of life and dietary options if you're already a candidate for dentures is worth weighing when considering the cost. Our team at Keith + Associates is also happy to work with patients regarding the costs, financing options and navigating insurance coverage.

  • How Long Does it Take to Get Dentures?

The full process of getting dentures can take a few weeks or a few months depending on several factors. If you need to have any teeth pulled before you're ready for your dentures then the process will take longer to allow you to heal. Since impressions need to be taken after any extractions take place creating your dentures can't begin before your extractions. Of course, every case is different and your dentist will be able to give you a more personalized estimate as you discuss your restoration options with them.
