Sedation Dentistry in the Mission and Overland Park, KS area.

At keith + associates dentistry, we use advanced sedation dentistry for a wide variety of in-house services. Our goal is to ensure you are comfortable, calm and relaxed through any dental treatment or dental procedure.

The Purpose of Dental Sedation

Sedation dentistry is the use of any type of dental sedation to reduce stress, anxiety, and any physical pain associated with dental treatment. Sedation is a safe and convenient way to help you feel more relaxed while at keith + associates dentistry while your treatment is being completed. We offer dental sedation through laughing gas, oral conscious, and IV sedation. IV sedation is most commonly used at keith + associates dentistry for surgical procedures, such as wisdom teeth removal or dental implants.

It’s important that you feel comfortable and safe during your procedure. Before any procedure, your doctor will recommend the appropriate level of sedation that meets your needs. Then, we will set up your appointment and plan accordingly for your procedure, knowing that you will be relaxed and calm during the dental appointment.

  • What types of sedation can I receive?

At keith + associates dentistry in Mission, KS, we use 3 types of sedation – nitrous, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation.

    Nitrous (Laughing Gas)

An easy sedation technique involving nitrous oxide gas that is pumped into a patient’s nose to inhale.

    Effects:

    • A sense of calm
    • Reduced feeling of many sensations
    • Reduces pain and anxiety
    • Short-acting sedation

    Post-Effects:

    • Still able to drive home
    • Normal feeling shortly after the procedure

    Oral Conscious Sedation

A deeper form of sedation gives patients more of a fuzzy memory of the appointment.

    Effects:

    • Awake and responsive, but the world seems blurry
    • Results in a “very sleepy” feeling
    • Feels no pain or sensations

    Precautions:

    • Must have a driver
    • Must fast the night before

    IV Sedation

This is the safest method of sedation because the medications can be tailored to each patient’s own levels extremely quickly

    Effects:

    • Deep sedation (Almost asleep)
    • Able to breathe on your own
    • Likely to not remember the procedure
    • Able to respond to commands but unaware of procedure happening

    Precautions:

    • Must have a driver
    • Must fast the night before
  • Is IV sedation safe?

Yes! IV sedation is one of the safest forms of sedation as we can quickly tailor the medications to each patient’s level. We offer IV sedation to healthy individuals with no major health conditions. It is important to note that you will need a driver to and from your appointment as it is not safe to operate machinery following IV sedation. If you are curious if you are eligible for IV sedation, contact our office and we will be happy to answer any of your questions.
