Easing Dental Anxiety

Did you know our team at Keith + Associates can help calm your dental anxiety? We understand that having any type of dental procedure can be scary or stressful. In fact, dental anxiety is very common among all age groups. We strive to always make you feel comfortable in our dental chairs, that’s why we offer dental sedation to help patients feel at peace and experience a positive, painless appointment. We also add a little extra comfort with our massage dental chairs where you can sit back, relax and enjoy your favorite show! Many of our patients enjoy this extra benefit when visiting our office.

Dental anxiety or fear of dentists can be caused by many factors including a traumatic healthcare experience, fear of judgment, low pain tolerance, or personal space issues. Because of these factors, it can be easy to put off necessary appointments. This can be very damaging to your oral and overall health. Our doctors want to help you maintain a healthy smile, while making sure you are comfortable and pain free! Many patients find that sedation helps them regain confidence and control of their oral health.

We hope you can take comfort in knowing that our doctors and hygiene staff are highly qualified and have received extensive training to administer dental sedation. We offer Moderate IV Sedation and Nitrous Oxide Sedation for your dental procedures. Whether you’re visiting us for a Dental Filling, Implant Placement or All-On-4 Surgery, we are here to help you feel completely relaxed and comfortable! If you are hesitant to change the appearance of your smile because you are afraid or anxious about undergoing long or complicated dental procedures, Moderate IV Sedation or Nitrous Oxide Sedation can help. These two types of sedations can make you feel comfortable during the treatment process and help you achieve a smile you can be proud of.

What is Moderate IV Sedation?

Moderate IV Sedation is a sedative we deliver through your bloodstream via your hand or arm. The tube administers the sedative drug directly into your bloodstream, and the IV remains in your vein throughout the entire procedure. Unlike most oral surgery practices and other dental offices, Keith + Associates brings in a trusted Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist to handle the anesthesia. While Dr. Bill is licensed to handle the sedation and does monitor the patient throughout the entire procedure, we provide this extra level of safety with our patient’s best interest in mind.

The sedative puts you in a state of deep relaxation that is much stronger than laughing gas or an oral sedative. Patients will be able to stay awake and respond to verbal commands, but it is likely to doze off or lightly fall asleep. Quite often, patients do not have any recollection of the procedure and feel little to no anxiety.

Typically, when undergoing Moderate IV Sedation we will ask that you don’t eat or drink prior to your procedure to avoid any complications. After the procedure is done and you are awake, your doctor will go over the necessary instructions to care for the affected area with you and your trusted driver. You will most likely feel tired for several hours after the procedure is complete, but this is completely normal. For the following day, you should avoid exercise, taking any medications your dentist did not approve, operating heavy machinery, driving, or drinking alcohol. Moderate IV Sedation is a great option for patients experiencing moderate to severe dental anxiety. Patients have also stated that this type of sedation makes the procedure go by very quickly.

We recommend the use of Moderate IV Sedation for:

  • Patients struggling with high panic or anxiety during dental appointments due to fear of procedures or triggers from intense sounds
  • Patients who need extensive or painful dental work
  • Patients with strong gag reflexes or who struggle to sit still
  • Patients who must have multiple or long procedures the same day

What is Nitrous Oxide Sedation?

Nitrous Oxide Sedation, or otherwise known as “laughing gas” is a safe and effective conscious sedation for children and adults who experience dental anxiety during procedures. It is a combination of nitrogen and oxygen administered with a mask that fits over the patient’s nose.
Once the mask is placed over the nose, the patient will instantly get a sensation of euphoria or feel “giddiness”. This will allow the patient to be completely conscious and aware but feel at peace and relaxed at the same time. This is a great solution for patients who have a fear of visiting the dentist or getting dental procedures done. Putting off a dental procedure can be detrimental to your teeth in the long run, so utilizing Nitrous Oxide Sedation can help curb fears and anxieties associated with the dentists. Many patients have overcome their fears with the help of Nitrous Oxide and can now schedule regular appointments with little to no anxiety.

Nitrous Oxide effects are instant and once the flow of gas has stopped, it wears off within minutes. Because of this, adults are able to drive themselves after their procedure and can go back to work or their daily activities. Children are observed for a short period of time after the procedure and are able to get back to their normal routine right away. If you think you might benefit from this type of sedation at your next appointment or operation, let us know!

We recommend the use of Nitrous Oxide Sedation for:

  • Patients struggling with high panic or anxiety during dental appointments due to fear of procedures or triggers from intense sounds
  • Patients with special health care needs
  • Patients with strong gag reflexes or who struggle to sit still
  • Patients who don’t respond well to IV sedation
  • Patients who must have multiple or long procedures the same day
